In May of 2008 Ted “Rock” Knapp was diagnosed with the disease, Amyloidosis and cancer, Multiple Myeloma…both incurable. He was diagnosed at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida.
He immediately began chemotherapy and steriod treatments in early June at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany. He loved the care of his “chemo crew” of nurses. They helped him get through his 5 months of treatment…all the while he continued his teaching and coaching full-time at Sherwood Christian Academy as well as beginning an adult Sunday School class at Sherwood Baptist Church. His Eagles finished the regular season at 6-4 for the first winning season in the 23 year history of the program.
Rock will be heading to Northside Hospital in Atlanta in late December for a stem cell transplant to attempt to drive his cancers into remission. His relocation to Northside will last a minimum of 6 weeks. Once he is released to go home, he will have to spend the following 2-4 months at home in isolation until his immune system is able to withstand normal contact with others.
Coach Rock plans on being on the sidelines next fall coaching his Eagles toward their first State Championship!
